England Smash World Cup Record Held Since 1966

England Smash World Cup Record Held Since 1966

England have smashed a World Cup record held since 1966, when they last won the competition.

The Three Lions last scored four or more goals when they faced West Germany in the 1966 final and won 4-2 - they've now broken that record with a win over Panama.

What makes the smashing of the record all the more special, was that it was broken before the second half even kicked off against Panama.

In the first half, John Stones opened the scoring with a brilliant header, before captain Harry Kane doubled the Three Lions' lead from the spot with a wicked penalty.

Jesse Lingard then added a third with a superb curling effort from outside the box.

And Stones then got his brace after a well-worked set piece play.

The Panama defence didn't take note of the VAR this tournament and once again fouled an England player in the box and so Kane stepped up and scored a carbon copy of his first penalty.

Indeed England have smashed four or more past Panama to see them sail them past the American side and into the knockout stages of the tournament.

Is it coming home? England supporters online certainly think so.

Gareth Southgate's men will face Belgium in their final group stage game on Thursday, with the winners of that game set to progress out of Group G as winners, with the losers as second.
