Manchester City fans threw objects at Manchester United players while one supporter allegedly performed money chants during the derby.

A small section of fans in one corner of the Etihad Stadium disgraced themselves during the second half of a feisty clash.

Fred ran over to take a corner with 20 minutes to play and had objects including lighters thrown in his direction.

The Brazilian and Jesse Lingard protested to the referee and refused to go over to the corner while items rained down from the stands.

Some Manchester City players ran over to try and calm down the fans while stewards struggled to gain control.

Fred went over again to take the corner and was hit by an unknown object, then went to the floor holding the back of his neck.

And a supporter in the Manchester City section was seen apparently performing a monkey chant with Fred and Lingard just yards away.

Manchester City said in a statement: "Manchester City FC are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a supporter making racial gestures during the second half of the match against Manchester United this evening.

"Officials from the Club are working with Greater Manchester Police in order to help them identify any individuals concerned and assist with their enquiries.

"The Club are also working with GMP regarding an instance of objects being thrown onto the field of play. The Club operates a zero tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life.

One Twitter user wrote: "Let's make the racist idiot Man City fan doing the monkey dance famous."

Another tweet read: "Man City fan doing monkey chants at a Utd player with two black City players a few feet away...how does someone that thick manage to get dressed in the morning?"

One more social media post said: "Well FA, millions of people just witnessed a Man City football fan doing monkey gestures towards Man Utd players Jess Lingard and Fred. Launching projectiles at them while taking a corner. I guess you can buy champions, but you can't buy class."

It was a nasty end to an awful night at the office for Manchester City as they lost even more ground on Liverpool in the title race.

First-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial gave Manchester United a 2-1 win at the Etihad to boost their top-four bid.

But it left Pep Guardiola's champions 14 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool after their win at Bournemouth earlier in the day.
