The Sun journalist Shaun Custis says Brendan Rodgers would be a good fit as Newcastle United boss, after speaking on The Press Box show on talkSPORT.

There are doubts that Antonio Conte would take the job due to the Italian's desire to take "oven-ready" teams that are already capable of challenging for major honours, and Custis feels that Rodgers may relish the task of building a team on Tyneside.

"I actually thought that Conte seemed like a great shout, because he is a proven winner," he said.

"He does rub people up the wrong way, but he is a proven winner. What we got from the Conte camp is sadly what I feared, in that he likes oven-ready teams that can challenge at the top.

"He's not a man who's going to help you get out of the relegation zone, and there are a lot hurdles to overcome before we get to January. So, who would I like to see? I genuinely believe the calibre of a manager like Brendan Rodgers would probably be a brilliant fit there.

"He might fancy the challenge because, I'm sorry Leicester fans, Newcastle is a bigger club than Leicester City. It would be a great challenge for him."

Rodgers is reportedly listed as the new favourite to take the job by Betfair at 5/2, ahead of Lucien Favre at 11/2 and Frank Lampard at 6/1.

The Northern Irishman has earned a sound reputation in the game, after winning the FA Cup at Leicester and a clean sweep of trophies with Celtic. He also took Liverpool within touching distance of the Premier League title and led Swansea City to promotion to the top flight.

Meanwhile, Custis' claim that Newcastle are a bigger club than Leicester certainly irked more than a few people in the responses, citing the lack of any major trophy won on Tyneside in recent years compared to the Foxes' FA Cup triumph last season.

@jonnypilcher09 said: "How are Newcastle a bigger club than Leicester? What have Newcastle won? Nothing, really don't get how people think they are a big club, big club in Newcastle that's it.

@JWC4491 had a countering opinion, and added: "But Newcastle have more trophies overall and have more years in Europe that Leicester have years in the prem."
