Barcelona Player Trolls Real Madrid Over Failed Kylian Mbappé Transfer On Deadline Day

A legend at the Nou Camp has had his say on Madrid's failure to get their man.

Legendary Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has trolled Real Madrid over their failure to sign PSG's Kylian Mbappé.

The 34 year old took to Twitter after the transfer window shut last night to mock an article by the Spanish newspaper Marca which discussed what shirt number Mbappé would wear at The Bernabéu.

Above a screenshot of the article, Piqué commented 'El 7', a reference to Mbappé's shirt number at PSG. The tweet has amassed over 22,000 retweets and 118,000 likes so far.

There were plenty of rumours about on deadline day yesterday that Mbappé was set to make a late move to join Carlo Ancelotti's side.

According to The Independent, Los Blancos launched a stunning £172 million bid for the 22 year old yesterday evening but much like their previous offer of £137 million a week ago, PSG did not budge.

His manager at PSG Mauricio Pochettino rubbished rumours about Mbappé's future yesterday and mocked Spanish TV channel El Chiringuito TV, , who have claimed the transfer was imminent throughout the summer.

But the Spanish giants are still expected to get their man, albeit in a year's time. Mbappé's contract at the Parc de Princes expires next summer, with Sky Sports' transfer expert Kaveh Solhekol suggesting he will make the switch on a pre-contract agreement for free.

This would be a seismic transfer and part of Ancelotti's wider efforts to rebuild his squad.

The Italian spent over £27 million to bring promising midfielder Eduardo Camavinga to the club from Stade Rennais yesterday and has emphasised his plans to build a team that has a 'mixture of youth and experience' that can replicate the 'great success' he enjoyed at the club in the past.

And whilst Piqué is entitled to take a pop at Madrid's failure to land Mbappé, he may want to keep quiet after his side's disastrous end to the transfer window.

Ronald Koeman's men have sent striker Antoine Griezmann back on loan to Athletico Madrid after a dismal two years at the Camp Nou. Joining the club for a whopping £107 million, much was expected of the Frenchman, particularly after he scored an excellent 133 goals in 257 games for his previous clubs.

But the deal never delivered, with Griezmann scoring just 35 times in over 100 games for Barca and winning just the one trophy. He becomes the 11th player to leave the club this summer as they continue to wrestle with financial restrictions.

So whilst Piqué can laugh and troll for now, he may not be smiling in 12 months' time.
