You'd have put your house on Lionel Messi scoring from here.

Lionel Messi may have scored just short of 40 league goals again this season but there's no doubt the Barcelona superstar should have at least one more after this shocking miss on the last day of the season.

At times this season Messi has looked like he's been on a one man mission to drag Barcelona to an unlikely and undeserved La Liga title but it was all to no avail as Real Madrid won the league.

Barca's win over Real last month had given them a chance to win the league and they came into the last day of the season knowing that if their rivals slipped up against Malaga and they won they would be champions for a third successive title.

However Barca weren't even keeping to their end of the bargain and went 2-0 down just after the hour mark, not helped by the fact that Real were easily beating Eibar.

At 1-0 down Messi had the chance to level things up but the five time Ballon d'Or winner somehow managed to mess up a chance that even John Guidetti would have been embarrassed to miss:

The Camp Nou side then pulled one back through an own goal.

Luis Enrique's side had the chance to level things up from the penalty spot but Messi, suffering from Jozy Altidore syndrome and couldn't even score from the penalty spot.

That was probably good though as the spot kick never should have been given after Jordi Alba's awful dive:

Luis Suarez did level things up for Barca not too long later and then Messi ended with a brace, including one from the penalty spot, to turn the game completely on its head.

And of course it wouldn't be Messi if he didn't manage a worldie:

Even on his worst day Messi still managed to score twice in a 4-2 win.

Most people's best days aren't as good as Messi's worst!
