Ryan Giggs Admits One Manchester United Transfer Was A 'Panic Buy'

Giggs saw a lot of players come and go at Old Trafford and the Manchester United legend says one player was definitely bought in a panic.

Jose Mourinho has handed over his list of wanted players to Ed Woodward and now sits back in a hope that he gets what he wants but according to former United winger it's not always been the way.

Ryan Giggs has gone from player to assistant manager to caretaker manager back to assistant manager and then to pundit in the space of just a couple of years but if anyone knows Manchester United it's him.

The Old Trafford legend is the most decorated player in the Premier League era, having won the league title all 13 times that United were successful as well as adding four FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues to his collection, as well as many other awards.

These days the Welshman is just a manager in waiting as he get linked with any lower mid-table Premier League club that has a vacancy. The 43 year-old also has a column in the Telegraph and revealed that one signing at Old Trafford was definitely a 'panic buy':

"Signing Marouane Fellaini so close to the deadline that August, the club's only major deal in a summer when we needed two or three big names, suggested that things were not running smoothly.

"United had signed players late in the window before - Dimitar Berbatov in 2008 springs to mind - but this time was different. This time it was more of a panic."

Giggs didn't blame David Moyes for the panic over the transfer and the failings that embodied that entire summer adding, "The recruitment in that first summer under David Moyes didn't go to plan.

"I don't blame David. He came in without any of the inside knowledge about how the squad worked - when certain players needed resting, who was right for which game, who needed to be moved on and who needed to be encouraged.

"Those of us who had lived through it could help him a bit, but a manager has to acquire that knowledge over time."

The only thing worse than Moyes at United has been Moyes at Real Sociedad and Sunderland. Image: PA

You certainly can mark that summer down as a failure in the transfer window for the Red Devils.

Ed Woodward tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Thiago, Cesc Fabregas, Toni Kroos and Ander Herrera that summer, couldn't even sign Leighton Baines and ended up with just Fellaini.

Not a vintage transfer window.
