Thomas Partey wanted to send a fond farewell to Atletico Madrid fans, after leaving to join Arsenal, but it didn't turn out as planned for the midfielder.

Arsenal tried all summer to sign a midfielder and finally on deadline day they decided to delve into their pockets and pay the release clause for Partey.

Doing so meant Arsenal could just deposit the £45 million with La Liga and get the deal done without negotiating with Atleti, something that left the Spanish club annoyed.

Partey clearly didn't want to leave the club on bad terms on took to Instagram to thank them for their support. "Dear Atletico fans, today I only have words of gratitude with you," he posted, "For several years now, Atlético de Madrid has been my home and a part of this family will always be with me.

"I want to thank the club for the trust placed in me from day one, but above all, I want to thank you.

"This wonderful hobby that I accepted from the first moment and that has shown that it is both in good and bad times and you never truly stop believing.

"Atlético de Madrid is not just a club, it is a family. Thank you."

However the post didn't go down well with fans of Diego Simeone's side. One fan replied saying, "Don't throw bullshit. No one will turn their back on their family when they need him the most. Especially not in the last moments."

A second replied, "Leaving the team lying 35 minutes after the transfer market closes is not being grateful, it is being a son of a b*tch."

Another added, "You don't do that to the team that raised you. I understood your concerns over the salary, you were right, but not to leave like that.

"You have no respect to this team, you were from hero to zero.

"You're not going to be remembered as a legend, just another rat!"

There was lots of mentions of the 27-year-old being a rat and plenty just posting rat emojis, making their anger at the player very well known.

Atleti weren't left completely empty handed on deadline day, with Lucas Torreira joining Simeone's team on loan for the season.
