L'Equipe's Ratings For Liverpool And PSG Don't Make Much Sense

L'Equipe's Ratings For Liverpool And PSG Don't Make Much Sense

The Reds were dominant at Anfield in the Champions League although they still needed a late Roberto Firmino goal to win the game.

Liverpool came far too close to throwing away a dominant performance on Tuesday night only to be saved by Roberto Firmino. Whilst their dominance nearly wasn't reflected in the result it was lacking in representation from L'Equipe's player ratings.

Thomas Tuchel must be fed up of Jurgen Klopp. Not only could the PSG manager not live up to his fellow German at Borussia Dortmund but the Liverpool manager beat Tuchel in the Europa League and last night doubled down with victory over PSG.

Klopp's side were well worth their win and in reality should have had the match sewn up long before Firmino's late winner.

The Premier League side found themselves with a 2-0 lead after 36 minutes through goals from Daniel Sturridge and James Milner, the latter being from the penalty spot.

PSG never really looked like being in the game in the first half but Thomas Meunier struck before half-time to halve the lead. Again in the second half the Ligue 1 champions didn't look like scoring but with just seven minutes to go Kylian Mbappe levelled things up.

Firmino's late winner meant the right team got the points based on their dominance but apparently French newspaper L'Equipe didn't quite see the dominance as much with their player ratings:

L'Equipe have a reputation for their player ratings being a little harsh but it's the comparison between certain players that seem a bit weird.

Jordan Henderson worked tirelessly in Liverpool's midfield and yet the England international only got a five rating which put him behind PSG central defenders, as well as his midfield partners Georgi Wijnaldum and James Milner.

The loss wasn't the ideal start for this season's competition for PSG and Tuchel. There's no doubt that their ambitions currently lie in winning Europe's elite competition after several years of dominating Ligue 1.

Klopp's side will have to go someway to even equal last season's run in the competition having made it to the final, although this is the perfect start.

Both teams will still have a tough time qualifying out of the group with Napoli still to come.
