Stuttgart Goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler Scores Clanger Of An Own Goal

Stuttgart Goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler Scores Clanger Of An Own Goal

The former Leicester City and Manchester United keeper has had an absolute mare in the Bundesliga this afternoon.

There's not much better in life than watching a team score a comic own goal, that's as long as you don't support the team conceding. Fortunately none of us here support Stuttgart so we can enjoy this drop.

Goalkeeper's are a strange lot. It's often been said that you've got to be a little strange to want to be one. Afterall no one in the playground really wanted to stand on their own trying to stop others having the fun of enjoying their goals without being a little strange.

That's basically the point of a goalie, to ruin football! The best thing about the beautiful goal is an absolutely worldie of a goal and whilst we can appreciate good saves the worst thing is when we're denied a worldie by a keeper doing his job.

Make no mistake about it, goalkeepers hate football and want to ruin your enjoyment. Image: PA

So when the men behind the sticks make a complete and utter tit of themselves with a stupid mistake I can't help but have a giggle, that said Ron-Robert Zieler's gaff certainly made me chuckle.

Zieler seemed to get to a long range free-kick but rather than catching the ball he completely messed up and merely got fingertips on it as it went in:

The goal technically doesn't go down as an own goal because the shot was on target but Zieler certainly helped Hamburg take the lead and things didn't improve for Stuttgart.

Daniel Ginczek did draw them level in the second half but the home team would score two goals of their own in the second period, scoring twice in five minutes, to take a 3-1 win and lift themselves above Freiburg.

Zieler though wasn't the only goalkeeper in Germany to make an himself look foolish on Saturday. Mainz goalie Robin Zentner was also at it, somehow not realising that the ball wasn't at his foot when he went to kick it:

All joking aside we have to be very thankful that there's some poor souls willing to be goalkeepers, we'd be lost without them.

Here's to you goalies, you may stop our goals but football would be a lot more boring without you.
