When I was younger my dad beautifully attached our Subbuteo pitch to a large bit of MDF so me, my brother and my dad could play endless hours of Subbuteo on the floor.

We had several glorious teams to pick from, Manchester United, Manchester City, Italy, Brazil and England. At one point we added a stand, for that extra atmosphere we were missing.

Times have changed a lot since then and now players can even add VAR to their humble Subbuteo settings, with a new pack including a ref and massive screen for him to look at.

On Saturday night though, Cristiano Ronaldo would have done anything for the World Cup qualifiers to have included the video assistant referee, or goal line technology at very least.

The Portugal forward thought he'd won his country's qualifier against Serbia in the last minute when the ball was cleared off the line.

Replays clearly showed the entire ball went over the line but the officials failed to give it and instead the Juventus striker was booked for angrily remonstrating with the linesman.

At least he can go home, play some Subbuteo and take his mind off it...
