Manchester United have missed out on one of the "greatest talents in Europe," in Angel Gomes, according to the director of football at his new club.

Gomes became the first footballer born in the 2000s to make a Premier League appearance, when he replaced Wayne Rooney in the striker's last ever game for the club, and there were high hopes for the youngster.

However the England under 17 World Cup winner decided to leave the club in the summer and not renew his contract, after playing just 10 games in all competitions in three years.

The 20-year-old joined Lille in Ligue 1 and director of football Luis Campos.has heaped incredible praise on Gomes. Speaking to O Jogo, Campos was asked why the French club chose to loan out the attacking midfielder to Boavista for the season, "It has to do with the need for him to complete his training," the DoF explained.

"Angel needs to play 30-40 games in one season and I think that, if everything goes well, he will demonstrate that he is one of the greatest talents in Europe.

"We are talking about a player who was the captain of the England team which won the Under-17 World Cup, and who is also, I think, the captain of the England U20s.

"He is a player that I had to watch several times live, both in the Manchester United teams and in the youth teams. For me, I repeat, he is one of the greatest European talents of today.

"It is necessary to create conditions so that all this talent can explode. I believe that Boavista and his coach can help him in that sense.

"He will play in a league that can grow his individual level so that, in the future, he can play at an even higher and more demanding level."

Despite having excellent strength in midfield, with Donny van de Beek joining Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba this summer, Solskjaer may come to regret not playing Gomes more and see him decide to leave the club.

In his debut for Boavista at the weekend Gomes started for the Primeira Liga side and got three assists in their 3-3 draw with Nacional.

United will at least be glad that Mason Greenwood has become a Premier League regular from their latest crop of youngsters, with the teenager once again coming off the bench to score on Tuesday night.

Still if Gomes does become as good as Campos thinks then United can always buy him back for £90 million like they did with Paul Pogba.
