Wayne Rooney's Donates £75,000 To Keep Childline Open On Christmas Day

Wayne Rooney is supporting some of the most vulnerable children in England and the rest of the UK by helping to keep Childline open on Christmas Day.

The Derby County caretaker manager is donating £75,000 to the NSPCC this Christmas, according to the Times, with £30,000 of that going towards Childline.

That money will help keep the advice phone line, which provides support for kids, open for kids on Christmas Day.

Speaking to the newspaper, Rooney said, "It's very upsetting to know that there are children out there who are really suffering and might be dreading Christmas.

"The pandemic has had a devastating impact on many young lives, and it's so important that Childline is there for young people when they need it most.

"I'm backing the NSPCC's Here for Children Christmas appeal as the pandemic has shown that we need the NSPCC and Childline now, more than ever, to be there for children and give them somewhere to turn."

The NSPCC have launched a 'Here For Children' Christmas appeal and warned that the stress of the holiday period, mixed in with the Covid-19 pandemic and the different tiers currently in place throughout the UK, including national lockdown in Wales, could put even more children in danger.

Rooney has donated around £425,000 to the NSPCC through his foundation and been an ambassador for them for the past five years.

He has committed himself to raising up to £1 million for the children's charity in the coming years.

Of course Rooney isn't the only United legend who is trying to help less fortunate children in the current climate, with Marcus Rashford launching two campaigns in recent months.

The England international has campaigned relentlessly this year for the School Meals initiative to be continued throughout school holidays.

He forced u-turns in government policy on two occasions and earned an MBE in the process.

The 23-year-old also started a campaign to help get kids reading, saying last month, "I only started reading at 17, and it completely changed my outlook and mentality.

""I just wish I was offered the opportunity to really engage with reading more as a child, but books were never a thing we could budget for as a family when we needed to put food on the table."
