Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been dropped for England's Euro 2020 last 16 clash with old rivals Germany on Tuesday evening, leaving no cover for Harry Kane.

The addition of three extra players for squads at this summer's Euros meant managers were always going to have to leave three of their squad out every game.

With teams having to field both backup keepers, it made things very difficult for the likes of Gareth Southgate, and the England boss left Jadon Sancho out of the 23 altogether for the opening game with Croatia.

The Three Lions have reverted back to a five man defence against Germany on Tuesday, with Bukayo Saka keeping his place in the team after impressing against Czech Republic, but don't have any out-and-out strikers on the bench.

Calvert-Lewin is the only one outside of Kane in the squad, and the Everton striker is one of the three not to make it on Tuesday.

Everton writer for the Athletic, Greg O'Keeffe, reported that the player is 'disappointed' with the decision and those close to are 'baffled' by the choice not to have him available to replace Kane.

Despite not having the 24-year-old on the bench, England will play with three forwards against Joachim Low's side in their last 16 tie.

Saka and Raheem Sterling, the only England player to score in the tournament, will start either side of Kane up front.

In midfield Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice continue their partnership, whilst Kieran Trippier and Luke Shaw will play either side of the back three of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Harry Maguire.

Southgate only picked two strikers in the squad initially, dropping Ollie Watkins from his original 33 man squad and not having Mason Greenwood available because of injury.

Kane would have been hoping to pick up his form from the Premier League season with Tottenham Hotspur, where he finished as the top scorer, and his tournament form from the 2018 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot.

However the Spurs striker is yet to score and his performances, especially against Scotland, have come in for criticism.

With no Calvert-Lewin in the squad, Southgate will have to turn to either Sterling or Marcus Rashford to play as a central striker if his captain needs to come off.
