Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry have become the first players to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame - with six more set to be announced.

Shearer, who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers before continuing his goalscoring feats with home club Newcastle United, is the Premier League's record scorer with 260 goals.

Henry, winner of a record four Golden Boots in the post-1992 Premier League era, is Arsenal's all-time highest goalscorer. The France World Cup winner is also rated by many as the Prem's greatest ever player.

Here, SPORTbible takes a look at everything you need to know about the new, prestigious award.

What is the Premier League Hall of Fame?

To be eligible for the 2021 Premier League Hall of Fame, players must have been retired by 1 August 2020 to be considered for induction.

Only a player's Premier League career is considered in their candidacy, not their performances in other competitions during the Premier League era.

Players must have made a minimum of 250 Premier League appearances unless they have achieved any of the following milestones:

  • Made a minimum of 200 Premier League appearances for one Club
  • Been selected to any of the Premier League Team of the Decade or 20-Year Anniversary teams
  • Won a Premier League Golden Boot or Golden Glove
  • Been voted as Premier League Player of the Season
  • Won three Premier League titles
  • Scored 100 Premier League goals or recorded 100 Premier League clean sheets (GK only)

Who are the additional nominees?

Joining Shearer and Henry as the inaugural Hall of Fame members will be six other Premier League stars, as voted for by football fans.

A shortlist of 23 nominees was announced during a TV show on Sky Sports on Monday:

Voting for six of the shortlist to join Shearer and Henry will take place at www.premierleague.com/halloffame and on the official Premier League app and is open until 9 May.

How is the Premier League Hall of Fame different to other versions?

The Premier League Hall of Fame will exist online and inductees will be selected by public and panel votes.

It will only celebrate players who have made significant on-pitch contributions to the Premier League only.

The National Football Museum's English Football Hall of Fame rightly celebrates the entire history of English Football and the English football pyramid.

Will the Premier League Hall of Fame be displayed in a museum?

No. The Premier League Hall of Fame will exist online, with dedicated content on www.premierleague.com.

Inducted players will receive a medallion engraved with their name and the year of their induction.

Do Hall of Famers get paid?

The short and sweet answer is no. The HoF is seen as a prestigious reward which requires no payment but will be a positive mark in history.
