Xbox Officially Confirms Its Next-Gen Console 'X Series' Will Be Released In 2020

Xbox Officially Confirms Its Next-Gen Console 'X Series' Will Be Released In 2020

Xbox has just revealed its new Series X Console - previously known as Xbox Project Scarlett.

The surprise announcement was made at the 2019 Game Awards this evening, with the console set to be released next year, though it's not yet known how much it will cost.

Microsoft - the company behind Xbox - used the announcement to show off Senua's Saga: Hellblade II - a sequel to the award-winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - which had been developed for the new console.

The tech giant shared the trailer for its new console on Twitter. It said: "Introducing the new Xbox Series X. Power your dreams."

According to Microsoft, the Series X will support 8K gaming, with frame rates of up to 120 fps in games, as well as ray tracing and variable refresh rate support. Whatever that means.

It will also be backward compatible and support "thousands" of titles which are already playable on the Xbox One and other consoles.

And it will work alongside previously sold accessories, "and industry-leading services like Xbox Game Pass to be available when you power on your Xbox Series X".

Microsoft said: "Xbox Series X will be our fastest, most powerful console ever and set a new bar for performance, speed and compatibility, allowing you to bring your gaming legacy, thousands of games from three generations and more forward with you.

"Alongside Xbox Series X, we also unveiled the new Xbox Wireless Controller. Its size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people, and it also features a new Share button to make capturing screenshots and game clips simple and an advanced d-pad derived from the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller.

"The new Xbox Wireless Controller will be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and will be included with every Xbox Series X."

Speaking to GameSpot, Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer said: "We wanted to design a console where the form was driven by the function."

And according to the tech firm, it will also boast a super fast SSD that will "virtually eliminate load times".

It's understood that Microsoft still intends on releasing a second, cheaper, and less powerful console alongside the Series X.
