Tyson Fury Wins Comeback And Fight Of The Year Awards

The undefeated heavyweight had an incredible year thanks mainly to his epic fight against Deontay Wilder that ended in a controversial draw.

Tyson Fury has completed a fantastic return to the boxing ring by being awarded the 'Comeback of the Year' and the 'Fight of the Year' in the World Boxing Council's awards.

It's not that long ago that it wouldn't have been a push to think that Tyson Fury would never box again. Things started going wrong for the British heavyweight after his historical victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015.

After that Fury suffered through depression, addiction, a lack of motivation and a complicated drug case with UKAD.

It took him nearly three years to get back into the ring. He dropped a lot of weight and made his competitive return in June last year against Sefer Seferi.

Coming from as low as he was, contemplating suicide, his comeback was already miraculous but just two fights into his return he 'earned' a fight for the WBC heavyweight title against undefeated American Deontay Wilder.

In the fight in LA in December the Gypsy King took Wilder to the 12th round, for only the second time in the Bronze Bomber's career, and was, for most people, the winner on points.

Unfortunately the judges didn't see it that way and it was a split decision draw with knockdowns in the ninth and 12th rounds going against the lineal heavyweight champion.

The knockdown in the 12th was ridiculous and it looked like there was no way the 30 year old could get up, but he actually ended the final round the stronger.

That fight, and the career comeback, has led to Fury winning two awards in the WBC's end of year awards:

Fury's story would have been even more incredible had he actually got the decision that many felt he deserved but in the end it doesn't take away from the story too much.

The former WBA champion will have another chance to get his hands on Wilder's title as the WBC have called for a rematch and given the sides a date to agree a purse.

Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk won fighter of the year and knockout of the year, for his finish against Tony Bellew, whilst Saul Canelo Alvarez won the 'fans choice' award.

Can Fury have an even bigger year in 2019?
