The WBC Have Ordered Canelo Alvarez And Gennady Golovkin To Have A Rematch

After the brilliance of the first fight between Canelo and GGG we're kind of glad the controversy has forced a rematch.

Is there anything better in boxing than watching two greats of the sport really go at it? Well what about watching them do it for the second time because that's what will happen with Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

At the end of last month we were finally treated to the long awaited fight between two of the best boxers in the world right now in Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin and 12 rounds later we weren't left disappointed with the action.

However what did leave a bitter taste in the mouth of everyone watching was the draw that we ended up with after the slobberknocker went the full distance. Again the result wasn't too atrocious but one judge got the scoring so wrong it was difficult to not feel deflated.

One judge gave the result to the undefeated Kazakh by two rounds, which seemed about right, another judge scored it a draw, which wasn't a bad call, but the final judge decided that the Mexican had it by eight rounds!

At their annual convention in Baku, Azerbaijan, the WBC ordered a rematch to take place with president Mauricio Sulaiman saying, via RTE, "It's the fight that the world wants to see."

Both men celebrated at the final bell, each thinking they were winner. Image: PA

Golovkin currently holds the WBC belt, along with the WBA (super), IBF and IBO belts however Alvarez isn't a fan of the WBC and wasn't actually fighting for it in the original fight.

Eric Gomez, who is president of Golden Boy Promotions, who represent Canelo, spoke to ESPN about the ruling saying, "Regardless of if they did or didn't order the rematch, we are going to try to make it happen. We'll do whatever it takes to make it happen because it's the fight that the fans want, it's what the fighters want, and it's what the media wants."

We certainly want to see this again. Image: PA

Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler, hinted at a Cinco de Mayo fight which would be huge and said, "It doesn't get any better than the fight with Canelo...He's still the world champion and this is a fight that the fans want again, so we can have a more definitive ending to the next one. We'll do whatever we can on our side to make it happen."

We can't wait for another 12 rounds of that kind of brilliance!
