Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin could be set for a third fight in May after Golden Boy promotions' Oscar de la Hoya admitted that talks had begun between the pair for the trilogy fight.

Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have been involved in two of the best fights in recent years with both bouts ending in controversial decisions, one a draw and one going to the Mexican.

GGG hasn't fought since his loss to Alvarez in September last year whilst Canelo has gone on to add the WBA (regular) super middleweight titles, to the WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring and lineal middleweight titles he already had, by beating Rocky Fielding.

After two mega fights, that could have gone either way, there is thirst for two of the world's best pound for pound fighters to go one on one again.

Alvarez is expected to drop back down to middleweight for his next fight and promoter Oscar de la Hoya has admitted talks between the two men have started regarding a possible May fight.

Speaking to ESPN Houston the founder of Golden Boy promotions said:

"Canelo Alvarez is fighting two to three times this year, and fighting the very best. Last night, I had preliminary talks with Golovkin's people. So we threw it out there about fighting for a third time.

"Cinco de Mayo is the biggest week in boxing in Las Vegas. So we're starting talks.

"Canelo is open to anything. Canelo is a fighter who wants to fight anybody to be great, and so a third fight is a possibility.

"We're starting discussions, and we'll see where it leads from there."

The two men exchanged some huge shots in both fights that would have stopped lesser men and Alvarez ended up inflicting GGG's first and only professional loss to date in the 2018 fight.

There was controversy between the two fights after the Canelo was banned from boxing for six months following a failed drugs test which caused a delay in the rematch.

The judges scoring in both fights has been hugely questioned with the Vegas held events both being like a home fight for Canelo but it would make sense to return there for a Cinco de Mayo fight.

There's no doubt that it's the biggest fight that could be scheduled in 2019 outside of Anthony Joshua facing Deontay Wilder to decide who is THE heavyweight champion.

Let's hope it happens once more.
