Anyone that would steal from an 85-year-old man is clearly a scumbag. Doesn't really need saying to be honest.

But this mugger got more than he bargained for when he tried to rob Ernie Hanratty.

You see, Ernie is a former amateur boxer, and he more than held he own with mugger Daniel Rose, who tried to demand £20 off him after grabbing his jacket lapel, as reported by the Mail.

Ernie was also a keen footballer, trialling for Newcastle United in the 1950s, and he wasn't having any of it:

"I grew up knowing how to look after myself and nobody pushed me around. I boxed at Stanley Boys Club and I wasn't a bad fighter but football was my game so I only had three fights."

Although Rose has a great name, synonymous with attacking the flanks and overlaps, this Daniel Rose is a prize arse.

Coming back from his morning shop in Stanley, County Durham, Ernie was confronted by him demanding money.

Ernie grabbed Rose by the wrist and confronted him, with Rose leaving with nothing but two newspapers and a plastic bag.

What did Ernie have to say about it?

"There was no way the bugger was getting away with any money, but he cost me two copies of a newspaper."

YES LAD!

Ernie explains the interchanges the pair of them had. After grabbing Ernie by the lapel badge, Rose said: "Give me £20 and I'll let you go."

Ernie responded: "You'll bloody go but you're not be getting any £20." He then grabbed him by the wrist. After a scuffle Ernie fell over, which gave Rose the time to escape with a couple of papers.

Rose was jailed for two-and-a-half years, though he genuinely seems to not remember the altercation. He was on a drugs and drink bender at the time and has since shown remorse.

Ernie's opinion: "He deserved to go to jail. I hope it teaches him a lesson but in my day you had more respect than to act like that.

"There'd be a bobby out who'd give you a clip around the ear. It happened to me many a time when I was kicking a football where I shouldn't have, but it taught you right from wrong. I was a bit annoyed the lad got away with my papers actually."

And what's Ernie's final statement on the matter?

"If I'd been a few years younger he'd have been on the deck in a second."
