Andy Ruiz Jr's trainer has revealed his fighter has promised to work harder and be more committed next time around following defeat to Anthony Joshua.

Ruiz Jr shocked the boxing world by beating Joshua in June, but he failed to defend his titles in the rematch, losing the heavyweight belts earlier this month.

And his trainer Manny Robles has claimed the 30-year-old boxer will be more dedicated in his next fight and dismissed speculation that they've split.

"Don't believe everything you hear," Robles told Bad Left Hook.

"I spoke to him the day after the fight, he said he would work harder and be more committed next time. I spoke to Ruiz Sr on a couple of occasions.

"His dad is looking for a new fight date and opponent as well. Not only myself but also his dad are giving him the time and space to reflect and think about his career. It's the holiday season and I'm sure he's spending time with his kids and family."

Ruiz Jr was schooled by Joshua in Saudi Arabia as he lost a wide points decision, but heavyweight great Evander Holyfield believes the Mexican-American can become a world champion again.

"Of course, it's possible. Joshua became champion again, right?" The 57-year-old former world champion said. "He made an adjustment. People who make adjustments, their chances are still good. He's young, and he has the chance to still do it.

"He made some bad choices," he added. "When you make bad choices, you gotta be accountable. If you're accountable, you can make adjustments.

"Go back to the work plan. Do what your daddy told you to do. All these years he's been right. What makes you think he's going to be wrong?"

Ruiz Jr was widely criticised for turning up overweight. He ballooned in weight in between fights and produced a sluggish performance on fight night.
