Floyd Mayweather has revealed he'll be back in action in Tokyo in February at a new MMA event named 'MEGA 2021.'

Last week Mayweather, who retired from competitive boxing for the third time in his career in 2017, following his win over Conor McGregor, claimed he was going to be back in action next year.

Speaking on Instagram last week, the American said, "Tokyo, Japan, I'm coming back, in 2021.

"I know the Olympics is in Japan in 2021, but me, myself, Floyd 'Money' Mayweather and my team will be doing something big in Tokyo Dome ... Japan, I'm on my way."

On Monday morning he called into a press conference for 'MEGA 2021' to reveal that he would be part of the event on February 28th, at the Tokyo Dome.

There isn't any more details about who he will fight or what the format will be, although it does seem unlikely it will be an MMA fight.

At the press conference 'Money,' who fought in Japan in 2018 when he took on kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition fight, is reported, via talkSPORT, to have said, "Japan is one of the most wonderful countries in the world. Tokyo is also a wonderful city. I want to entertain Japanese people.

" train a lot and make an effort as usual. I want to prepare to entertain people.

"The last time I performed in Japan, I didn't practice that much. I want to prepare well this time...

"I would like to thank all the Japanese fans and Tokyo fans. Thank you for remembering me.

"I have no idea what kind of opponent I am [facing] now. I'm looking forward to going to Tokyo anyway.

"It's a place where great games have been organised, so I just want to go to Japan to entertain Japanese fans."

The fight against Tenshin wasn't without its controversy. It was initially announced as having been made, without any talk of the rules or format of the fight.

Mayweather then said just two days later that it was off, as he'd only agreed to do a non-televised exhibition in front of a small private group and had been blindsided by press conference and announcement.

He later reversed the decision and they agreed to a three round boxing match, which the 50-0 boxer ended in the first round with a knockout.

In December 2019 Mayweather claimed that he would come out of retirement in 2020 and had teamed up with Dana White to promote boxing.

It led to rumours of a rematch against McGregor or potential fights with Khabib Nurmagomedov or Jorge Masvidal but the comeback never materialised.
