Fake rivalries, questionable decisions and confusing governing bodies and organisations running the sport- boxing can be an ugly sport without needing the help of Leon Lawson's disgraceful act last night.

Andre Dirrell's IBF interim super middleweight title fight with Jose Uzcategui ended in complete and utter disgraceful farce last night. First with then ending of the fight and then the hideous scenes afterwards.

Dirrell had lost both of his previous super middleweight world title fights to British boxers. First he lost to Carl Froch in 2009, his first ever loss, and six years later he lost to James DeGale in only his second ever loss.

This time he only had to wait two years for a shot at a title, albeit it the interim belt. Last night he faced Venezuelan José Uzcátegui, with the view to taking on DeGale in the future.

The fight ended controversially at the end of the eighth round when Dirrel was knocked out by a punch that was thrown after the bell. The referee gave the American time to recover but he clearly couldn't get to his feet.

Once the doctor had checked on him the ref had no option but to disqualify Uzcátegui, however the controversy didn't end there. Dirrell's uncle, Leon Lawson, part of the fighters team got in the ring to confront his nephew's opponent and landed a disgusting cheap shot on him:

After the fight Dirrell was apologetic saying, "I'm sorry for what my coach has done,My coach is my family, my uncle, and he was worried. He cares for me. He loves me. Please forgive him."

But ESPN's Dan Rafael confirmed that the police were looking for Dawson and treating the incident as assault:

In a sport where the aim is to hit someone to the point where they can't hit you back it shows just how disgraceful this cheap shot is that people are up in arms about it!

Lawson shouldn't be allowed near the sport again.
