Canelo Alvarez Claims That He Could Beat Floyd Mayweather In A Rematch

Canelo Alvarez Claims That He Could Beat Floyd Mayweather In A Rematch

Canelo Alvarez is confident that he could avenge his only defeat to Floyd Mayweather if they set up a blockbuster rematch.

The 29-year-old Mexican became a four-weight world champion after beating Sergey Kovalev last November at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

And Alvarez is adamant that a rematch with Mayweather, who is now retired, would be much different compared to their initial encounter.

"It's different now," he said. "I'm [a] different fighter.

"I think he's good too but I'm a different fighter now.

"Maybe [it would be a] different fight."

Mayweather put on a masterclass performance against the Mexican star in 2013 and picked up a comfortable victory on points.

Alvarez, who has managed an incredible 53 wins in 56 professional fights, has beaten down the likes of Kovalev, Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan since his defeat to Mayweather.

But his clash with the American was incredibly one-sided and saw 'Money' showboat throughout.

Alvarez loaded up and swung in the 11th round, violently hitting the top rope after missing Mayweather - who glided away then bent over and stared out of the ring in exaggerated fashion, as if watching the punch sail to the back of the arena.

Many criticised Mayweather for cunningly picking off Canelo before he reached his peak, but the sport's highest-earning fighter gave a brilliant response to that theory on his UK tour this March.

"When I was 21 and I fight a guy who's 30, you know what they say?" he asked in London's York Hall. "He was over the hill; Floyd beats fighters who are over the hill.

"Now if I'm 36 and Canelo is 23 - I'm more than 10 years older than him, and you're better when you're younger.

"But when I beat someone younger, then guess what? It [the story] becomes: I got too much experience. OK. How about the guys I beat who are my age?"

It's safe to say that the two stepping into the ring once again would create fireworks.
