Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has warned Gennady Golovkin that he would convincingly win a possible trilogy fight.

The pair have faced each other twice before, with a controversial split draw in the first bout and the Mexican winning the second by majority decision.

There have been calls for a third match-up, but 38-year-old Golovkin's advancing years make it something that would have to happen in the near future to be worthwhile.

However, 'Canelo' seems to believe that it isn't worthwhile whatever the situation, telling The Ring magazine: "I don't have to prove anything to anyone, I did my job already by beating him twice.

"Right now, I want to stay at 168lbs (super-middleweight), and if (GGG) wants to move up, we'll see what happens, if that's what the fans really want.

"I'm at 168 and I don't have to do any favours for anyone. I'm at 168 and our goal is to unify here.

"I feel good right now, I feel strong. I feel like I'm at my peak and I continue working hard.

"If a fight happens a third time (with GGG), I feel so good that I most likely knock him out and do some serious damage."

Golovkin has never been knocked out, with his only defeat coming in the 2018 bout with Alvarez.

Meanwhile, 'Canelo' will have to win his mandatory WBC defence against Turkish fighter Avni Yildirim.

Alvarez is a heavy favourite against the 29-year-old 21-2 boxer, after comprehensively defeating Callum Smith for the WBC and WBA middleweight titles last month.
