Mayweather Was Stopped From Placing A Huge Bet On Himself To Win

Mayweather Was Stopped From Placing A Huge Bet On Himself To Win

Heading in to last night's fight with Conor McGregor, it's fair to say Floyd Mayweather was feeling confident.

So confident, in fact, that he reportedly attempted to put a huge bet on himself to win, but was denied.

According to ESPN, Mayweather wanted to put a $400,000 (£309,957) on himself to win in under 9.5 rounds, but was told by bookies there was legal concerns surrounding him placing such a wager.

While the bookmakers looked into the legality of the bet, Mayweather reportedly changed his mind and tried to put on a different bet - for him to win by knockout or TKO - but ended up abandoning the whole thing, because he wasn't happy to wait.

It has since turned out that Nevada State authorities don't have any specific rule banning boxers from betting on themselves, so the bets should have been accepted.

Even more frustratingly for Mayweather, either of his bets would have resulted in a win. I mean, it's not like he needs the money is it, but it still must have been pretty annoying.

Mayweather would have picked up a profit of $200,000 (£154,978) to add to the obscene $100million (£77million) cash-pile he was already given for last night's 'money fight'.

But there could be a little glimmer of extra dosh for Mayweather, speaking to ESPN after his victory, he said: "I think that we bet 100 on nine and a half. I gave my guy six figures to go bet. I have to make sure he bet because earlier today I went to the sportsbook to bet and they wouldn't let me bet."
