New South Wales State of Origin coach Brad Fittler has been massively impressed with Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai.

The Penrith pair have guided the undefeated Panthers to the summit of the NRL ladder, putting opposition teams to the slaughter on a weekly basis.

Their electrifying form has certainly left a lasting impression on the rest of the competition and it seems Fittler has joined the growing list of people who can't seem to take their eye off the duo.

The deadline for Origin squads is nearing, and with question marks still remaining over Fittler's halves pairing, his latest praise for the duo could be a small indication of who he's leaning towards to fill the No.6 and No.7 jumpers.

"There's a lot to like about what they're all doing out there," Fittler told 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio.

"The fact is, Jarome and Nathan, whether it's because they've played with each other for so long through junior football or not, they complement each other, there's no ego in anything they do.

"When one kicks, the other chases, when one runs, the other supports, and that doesn't always happen.

"When you look at any sport and any team, it's always about putting the team first. This is the greatest example of that happening."

It remains to be seen which player will partner Cleary in the halves, although Luai would be the obvious frontrunner given his formidable form.

But while his talent on the park speaks for itself, the 24-year-old remains humble and knows that he still has plenty of room for improvement.

"That would be awesome," Luai told Wide World of Sports Radio.

"I've got a lot of improving to do and the Origin arena is a different beast, so I've just got to keep improving every week and playing well with the boys.

"If I do get that opportunity then it would mean just as much to (my family) as it does to me."
