Karl Stefanovic was left in stitches during a hilarious segment with sports reporter Tony Jones on Wednesday.

The Today show co-host couldn't contain his laughter after a cheeky joke with Melbourne-based reporter Jones regarding the AFL Grand Final.

Talks have been ongoing as to whether the location of the AFL Grand Final should be moved away from Melbourne as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the state of Victoria.

But for AFL-fanatic Victorians, including Jones, that just isn't in the realm of possibility.

And on Wednesday, Queenslander Stefanovic decided to have a bit of banter with his colleague, teasing him him about the news that AFL officials had decided to move the Grand Final to the Gabba in Queensland instead of staging it at its usual home of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

"The COVID blows keep coming for Victoria," Stefanovic said while playing Tracy Chapman's famous song 'Baby Can I Hold You'.

Karl Stefanovic was in hysterics.

"This song is just for you, my man. Close your eyes!"

The duo laughed amongst each other during the live segment, but it didn't take long for proud Melburnian Jones to come back with a rebuttal.

"Look, you stupid little man," Jones joked.

"If you honestly think I'm going to come on and be all grumpy and morose, you're wrong, Karl. You're wrong!

"I'm thrilled to the back teeth Brisbane has stolen the biggest sporting event in Australia, I couldn't be happier! I know the AFL-loving fans in Queensland will get behind it.

"They'll embrace everything that is special with the AFL... it's not like we have nothing to do. It's bin night tonight."
