Shawn Bradley has been left paralysed after being struck by a car earlier this year.

The 7-foot-6-inch former Dallas Mavericks centre, who is one of the tallest NBA players in history, was riding his bicycle near his home in Utah when he was hit by a car travelling behind him.

Mavs fans have been waiting patiently for an update on his condition ever since news broke of the initial incident.

But according to the latest reports, it's not good news.

48-year-old Bradley suffered traumatic injuries to both his spinal cord and neck meaning he'd have to undergo surgery in order to fix it.

But doctors confirmed that unfortunately he had been left paralysed as a result of his injuries.

"With his wife Carrie at his side around the clock, and supported by an amazing team of rehabilitation specialists and family, Bradley is in good spirits," a statement released through the Dallas Mavericks website said.

"He plans to use his accident as a platform to bring greater public awareness to the importance of bicycle safety.

"Bradley asked to convey his deep appreciation for the outpouring of well wishes and prayers he has received from family, friends and fans. Their support has energised his recovery and bolstered his confidence that he will manage the long process ahead successfully."

Dallas' owner Mark Cuban lead the outpouring of tributes for Bradley.

"We are saddened to hear of Shawn's accident," Cuban said.

"Shawn has always been incredibly determined and shown a fighting spirit. We wish him nothing but the best in his recovery. He will always be a part of our Mavs family."

Bradley was the second overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers.

After two years in Philly, he joined the New Jersey Nets before eventually finding his home in Dallas in 1997.

"Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to Shawn Bradley," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said.

"That news obviously broke in recent hours and I know that all of Mavericks' nation feels the same sentiments. We hope that he does better. Just very tragic news to hear. So thoughts and prayers to him and his family."
