A man in Puerto Rico has been arrested by police for allegedly killing a dog after it stole his golf ball.

The bloke, who has now been identified as Salil Zaveri, has claimed that he acted in self defence after the stray dog leapt into his golf buggy and nicked his ball while he was playing near the 17th hole at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Resort.

It is alleged that 60-year-old Zaveri was so upset that he then pulled out his 9mm handgun and shot the dog several times.

And according to El Vocero de Puerto Rico, the poor dog died on the scene in front of other shocked golfers.

"I took the first shot when the dog was less than 10 feet away and the dog rolled over but may have died slowly so I got out of the cart and took two more shots out of mercy," Zaveri told Daily News.

Suspect Zaveri is currently being held in a cell by agents from the Rio Grande District.

He is expected to appear in court on May 19 facing a number of weapons and animal mistreatment charges.
