Steve Smith had an absolute nightmare last night - not that he seemed too bothered by it though.

The Australian cricketer somehow managed to get himself stuck in a lift in the Melbourne-based Park Hyatt hotel he was staying in with the rest of the Ashes-winning team.

But instead of hitting the panic buttons, he calmly waited for assistance, documenting his hour-long ordeal on his Instagram story.

Now the videos have gone viral - and it's easy to see why.

" Not quite the night I had planned, I'm currently stuck in a lift," Smith told his followers in the opening clip.

"I've been in here for about 25 minutes. I'm on my floor, I'm staying on this level but the doors won't open.

"Out of service up there apparently. I've tried to get the door open, I've got this side open. Marnus (Labuschagne) is on the other side trying to open that to not much avail.

"Not quite the evening I had planned, let's be honest."

With his legs growing tired, Smith decided to take a seat on the floor as he waited for the cavalry to arrive.

It was here that the fun really began as he started fiddling around with his various Instagram filters - coming up with some absolute beauties which included a hilarious cameo appearance from LMFAO.

"Well, I'm just taking a seat," Smith said.

"What else do you do when you're stuck in a lift? I could be here for a while. Anyone got any suggestions for what I can do?"

Help soon arrived in the form of Smith's fellow batsman Labuschagne, who got to work in wedging the lift door open.

But seeing as though Smith had been trapped inside for almost an hour, Labuschagne thought his teammate needed some snacks.

Reaching in through the smallest of cracks in the sliding door, Labuschagne tipped out a couple of M&Ms for Smith to enjoy.

Clearly buzzing, Smith replied: "What have you got? Some food for me? A few M&Ms? That's naughty!"

The former Test captain was eventually saved, finally making his way out of the lift to a round of applause from onlookers.
