As far as unbiased assessments go, they don't come more brutally-honest than this.

Shawn Porter's father was on the receiving end of a chorus of boos from boxing fans while he gave an interview about his son's performance.

Porter was taking on one of the best pound-for-pound boxers on the planet in the form of undefeated star Terence Crawford.

During the bout, Porter came out all guns blazing but Crawford's experience shone through and he ended up dropping his opponent twice in the 10th round.

Seeing that his son was struggling, father and corner man Kenny Porter threw in the towel which saw Crawford have his hand raised by the referee in perhaps his biggest win to date.

Speaking after the bout, Kenny was asked to analyse his son's performance, but his in-ring answer left many surprised with just how honest he was.

When asked why Shawn came up short, Kenny replied: "Honestly? His preparation.

"He didn't prepare like I wanted him to prepare. So that just makes me say, 'You know what, I don't want him in that situation.'

"He fought a great fighter, the guy's super sharp, and he's at a deficit. It's like fighting this guy blindfolded when you're at a deficit like that. I wasn't going to let that happen to him."

Coach Porter went on to reveal that perhaps his son wasn't fully listening during their training sessions in the build-up to the fight.

"When guys get to certain levels, they believe they know what they're doing and they don't necessarily take in all the information," he added.

"This is where we're at with it. I had to make that decision [to stop the bout]. It's an easy decision for me. He lives right across the street from me, I'll be having breakfast with him in the morning."

He didn't get the chance to have his say inside the ring, but in his post-fight press conference Porter announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 34.

Many took to social media to pay their respects to the two-time word champion on a stellar career, while others took aim at his father.

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith said: "That stoppage by the father of @ShowtimeShawnP was ridiculous. It probably wasn't going to get any better @terencecrawford is a bad brother. No.2 lb-4-lb behind @Canelo. But I don't want to hear that it was GONNA get ugly. Damnit, it wasn't yet. AWFUL STOPPAGE! Not right at all."

Stephen A. added: "Respectfully, this is not good. For @ShowtimeShawnP's father to say his son "didn't prepare?" To put his son on blast like that. I respect the Porter's but damn.....that was just so disrespectful to say publicly like that. I like the man. Just wish he didn't do that."

Elsewhere, women's boxing champion and MMA star Claressa Shields tweeted: "Man no his daddy did not just say that!!!!!!! He said he stopped it because of his preparation!!!!! Man I'm embarrassed for Shawn Porter! That's insane!"

As for Crawford, he is now the only man in history to stop Porter and now looks set to take on welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.
