Is Floyd Mayweather serious about stepping inside the famed Octagon? Or is he just teasing MMA fans and Conor McGregor?

Well, following Mayweather's recent social media activity, McGregor responded with his own post. And he's now given his first interview since the cross-over rumours.

The 40-year-old retired boxer called time on his professional career after racking up his 50th victory against the UFC star, but is he set to return to the fighting arena in the shape of a cage?

Typically, the Irishman is confident in doing anything he pleases if Mayweather does indeed step foot inside the cage.

"I'd do as I please against him inside the Octagon," McGregor said of Mayweather via Bloody Elbow.

While claiming he would respect Mayweather if he transitioned to MMA.

"But if he does do it - I know he's flirting with it - I would have respect for him. I think he would get his earned respect.

"If it is (all talk), it will follow him for the rest of his days that he did not do it. I said I would (fight him in boxing), I stepped up, and I did it," McGregor added.

McGregor, 29, hasn't fought under the UFC banner since November 2016 where he dethroned Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC lightweight champion.

During his absence, Tony Ferguson raised UFC gold by bagging the interim-lightweight title, and McGregor is eyeing up a bout against the American.

"I'm currently in negotiations to face my next opponent," McGregor said on his fighting future.

"We have many options. There's the current interim lightweight champion [Tony Ferguson], there's an undefeated Dagestani [Khabib Nurmagomedov], maybe a big Russian event. There's obviously the Nate Diaz trilogy. Of course, the Mayweather fight is there.

"There's many options (and) we're at the table at the moment. Times are good, life is good.

Ferguson? Nurmagomedov? Diaz rubber match? Mayweather in the UFC?
