UFC 222 could've seen Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar. But, instead, the promotion booked Brian Ortega.

And the budding featherweight prospect produced a virtuoso performance last night by becoming the very first pro-fighter to stop Edgar. Shortly after, the 'current' UFC lightweight champion responded.

According to McGregor, he was close to filling the void left by Max Holloway who withdrew from his bout with Edgar, until the UFC nixed those plans.

McGregor and Edgar subsequently exchanged words.

He's now reacted to the New Jersey native suffering his first stoppage loss.

"Frankie's career deserved for that to be against me tonight. Respect Frankie. Love and respect always! A true fighters fighter," he posted on Twitter.

Class.

A potential match-up against Edgar is now pretty much off the table.

The UFC/MMA community continue to await the return of McGregor who's determined to fight inside the Octagon this year. He hasn't donned the 4oz gloves since 2016 where he became UFC lightweight king.

Meanwhile, Edgar's defeat to Ortega snaps a two-fight win streak, while losing his opportunity to contest for UFC gold.

Though, Ortega, 27, is now in line to challenge Holloway who's eyeing up a fight at UFC 226.

Holloway vs. Ortega, anyone?!
