Reports emerging from America are suggesting that Argentine captain Lionel Messi has decided to quit international football following his sides penalty shoot-out loss to Chile.

Speaking to TyC Sports in the aftermath of the game, Messi says "The selection is finished for me" - seemingly suggesting that he is to abandon La Albiceleste after 112 games in 11 years.

The announcement comes just days after Lionel Messi broke Gabriel Batistuta's record of all-time top goalscorer in their Copa America semi-final against the USA but missed a penalty that contributed to his sides loss in the final last night.

Images of the Argentine captain crying following Chile's winning penalty circulated social media before the shock announcement was made by La Pulga himself.

UPDATE: News is emerging that Messi's Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano has also quit the national team, laying down his sword after 13 years of service and 128 appearances.

UPDATE TWO: Reports suggest that Sergio Aguero is also considering his future in the national side, following the departures of Messi and Mascherano.
