Simply Spurs Summarises: A Review Of The Week's Football From Simply's Perspective

SIMPLY SUMMARISES - Monday 16th October

If you're a Spurs fan I'm hoping you'll know who I am. If not, you're living under a rock (or you either haven't heard of me, support a different club, or just think my account's sh*t in general. Yeah, those scenarios are probably more likely.) So let me give you a short introduction to who I am and what I do: I'm a 21 year-old Spurs fan that's recently graduated and who's made absolutely no use of his degree by securing a job here at ODDSbible, creating memes and writing articles like this one. Without the support I gained from my followers on @Simply_Spurs I'd probably be sleeping outside the construction site of the new stadium, so a big shout out to you guys.

Now that that's out of the way with, let's get into what happened during the week in the world of football.

We all know how boring the internationals are so let me keep this brief: Wales showed they're nothing without Bale, Messi proved that he's still the 2nd greatest player of all-time after Moussa Sissoko, Alexis Sanchez is spending next summer watching the World Cup at home with his dogs and the USA absolutely fluffed their lines. Blame Trump.

Finally Saturday arrived and the Premier League was back. It was my mate's 22nd birthday, so we spent the day having a local pub-crawl; encountering a variety of "yer da's" at each pub, embracing their unique culture. Unfortunately, the first game was Liverpool vs. Man United. This game is always a snooze fest. I get that they're the two biggest clubs in England, but that doesn't mean this fixture's ever a great spectacle. I spent the whole week having a moan at work during the build-up to this game about how Sky Sports News were making out that it was the biggest match in the history of football. What a surprise, it ended 0-0. Yawn. Next pub.

As none of the 3pm kick-offs were televised I spent the next couple of hours constantly checking my phone to see whether Manchester City were already 8 goals up, but more importantly, to check whether Bournemouth had taken the lead at Wembley against Spurs. Seeing Palace beating Chelsea made me question whether I'd had one too many already, but to my surprise, they were actually winning, and ended up holding on. Roy Hodgson you beautiful owl. Starting to finally forgive him for putting Kane on corners at the Euros last summer.

Whilst City were scoring for fun against Stoke, Spurs were 1-0 up against Bournemouth. A 1-0 lead at Wembley against a team we should beat you say? What's that? Jermaine Defoe's coming on for Bournemouth? And then it inevitably happened; my phone notified me that Bournemouth had equalised. Most of my mates are Arsenal fans, so I had to just sit there crying into my pint as the onslaught of abuse began. However, by some sort of miracle, it appears that the notification about Defoe's equaliser was in fact an error, and Spurs were still winning. I couldn't quite believe it, Spurs finally won in the league at Wembley. What a day and the best was still to come...

As we stumbled into the final pub of the day, Watford vs. Arsenal had kicked off. It was around the 60th minute when Mesut Ozil was preparing to come on. "Bet Watford win now" I joked to my Arsenal mates, who gave me a look of disgust (but deep down I'm sure they agreed with me). To my delight, Ozil missed an absolute sitter to wrap up the three points, which then led to Watford winning a penalty and scoring from it. After laughing at Jack Wilshere getting ready to come on, only to be sent back to the bench, Tom Cleverley grabbed a late winner for Watford. Not a word from any of my Arsenal mates as I struggled to contain my laughter. Chelsea lose, Arsenal lose, Tottenham win. Happy days!

After losing another game for my Sunday league team the next morning, I got home absolutely knackered, had a quick shower, and got ready to chuck on whatever 1.30pm game Sky Sports were showing, only to then remember that it was being televised in India and not the UK. After watching the highlights I'm glad I missed out and feel extremely sorry for the young lads in Mumbai who had to sit through that. The final game of the day was Southampton vs. Newcastle. It ended 2-2. That's all I've got for this fixture as I fell asleep after the first 5 minutes. Sorry not sorry.

So there we have it, my very first 'Simply Summarises' piece. Any sort of feedback, whether it's positive or negative, would be greatly appreciated to help me improve for the future. I hope you all enjoyed reading and I'll see you again next Monday. Keep in mind that Spurs are playing Real Madrid and Liverpool during the week, so expect a far more depressing summary next time.
