Manchester City start the season better than any other current Premier League side, according to a new analysis of the 20 teams' opening day results over the last decade.

The Sky Blues have won eight games from their round one fixtures over the last 10 years, collecting 25 out of the 30 points available - two more points than Chelsea and three more than cross-town rivals Manchester United.

The research from bookmakers.tv also found that, although they sit in sixth position with 18 points, Watford are the only club not to lose an opening day fixture in the last decade.

Cardiff also disrupt the traditional 'top four', collecting 19 points with five wins and four draws in opening-round fixtures.

The five teams with the best opening day record are:

Manchester City

At the bottom of the table, Newcastle are the opening day losers, with both the lowest points total (7) and number of goals scored (6). Fans of Everton and Crystal Palace also might not want to get their hopes up ahead of the new season - their sides have picked up just seven and eight points respectively.

Topping the table for goals scored, the most prolific clubs are Chelsea (25), Manchester City (24), and Leicester City (21).

Cardiff and Fulham keep things cagey to start, with both sides conceding just six goals across the 10 fixtures - the best of all 20 Premier League clubs.

West Ham (five wins and five defeats) are the only side not to pick up a single draw from their last 10 season openers, whereas Watford play out the most stalemates on the opening day (six draws).

Phillip Trampe of bookmakers.tv commented: "We thought it would be interesting to analyse each club's performance on the opening day of the season. While it's no surprise to find both Manchester clubs and Chelsea in the top three, seeing Cardiff amongst the top four gives hope for a fast start for the newly promoted side.

"After Manchester City's 100-point haul last season, they face a difficult first game away to Arsenal, but time will tell whether they can maintain their table-topping record."
