Can Sizing John make it a Gold Cup double?

The first day of the Punchestown Festival threw up some shock results but here are selections for the second day of the meeting.

3:40: Punchestown - Crossed My Mind 10/1 Each Way and Close Shave 10/1 Each Way.

Crossed My Mind was very impressive when registering a bloodless success at Wexford last time and whist he must cope with a step up in trip and this being his handicap debut, he makes appeal as an unexposed contender.

Close Shave is also unexposed and represents an in form trainer. An authoritative winner at Fairyhouse last time after being given a great ride by Barry Geraghty, he looks all about stamina and whilst he will have to jump better, he makes plenty of appeal.

4:20: Punchestown - Minella Till Dawn 11/4.

Held every chance at Fairyhouse last time when falling at the final flight and he might be able to make amends here. He has finished placed behind some unexposed horses so far this year and looks to hold a good chance here.

4:55: Punchestown - Monalee 7/2 and Al Boum Photo 9/1 Each Way.

Monalee ran well in the Albert Bartlett and whilst he has to reverse the form with Penhill, I spoke to his trainer after Cheltenham and I was taken with the confidence he had in the horse. He was arguably a little too keen that day and I'm keen at the prices to side with him.

Al Boum Photo remains unexposed and whilst this is another step up in class, he is steadily improving.

5:30: Punchestown - Sizing John 11/10.

I would love to see Coneygree win this but it's going to be a tough ask for him to win on his first start since November particularly with his recurrent injury problems. By contrast, Sizing John was very impressive in both the Irish and Cheltenham Gold Cup's and it is difficult to look past him not confirming the form with some of his other rivals.

6:05: Punchestown - Fayonagh 9/4 and Someday 4/1 Each Way.

Fayonagh was impressive when coming from last to first in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival and she looks a mare to keep on the right side of having showed a potent turn of foot that day. Someday also makes appeal having been ruled out of the same race and he should be fresh for this having won a decent contest at Leopardstown in February.

6:40: Punchestown - Rightdownthemiddle 13/2 Each Way and Jetstream Jack 9/1 Each Way.

Both are in the care of Gordon Elliott with the former finishing a decent second on his stable debut at Aintree earlier this month, whilst the latter might appreciate the better ground as I've been waiting for a big run from him all season.

7:15: Punchestown - Bluegrass Princess 6/1 Each Way.

Won well at Naas at a big price in March, quickening up in taking fashion that day to score by 11 lengths. No reason why he cannot confirm that form with Mystic Theatre in this event.
