You've read the racing pages, listened to advice from that friend of a friend who knew an ex-trainer and you're confident that this time, you've backed a winner. Except your horse comes in last over the line. It's not a result you'd normally celebrate, until now...

For the first time at The FestivalTM, punters will have a reason to celebrate backing the losing horse - thanks to Presenting Partner, Magners Irish Cider.

To celebrate their sponsorship of the title race - The Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup - Magners will encourage racing fans to look for a golden lining instead of a silver one, by offering the opportunity to swap a 'losing ticket', for a case of Magners Original Irish Cider.

To turn a loss, into a win, those who took a punt on the last horse to cross the line need only upload a picture or screenshot of their betting slip to a dedicated page on the Magners website - www.magners.co.uk/losingticket. This will be valid on all bets placed on the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup.

With the attention of bookies, tipsters and punters firmly on the race favourites, Magners has turned to previous Gold Cup winner and celebrated jockey, Andrew Thornton, to share his unique tips on how to pick the last horse in the race. Clue: it's not always the horse with the highest odds.

Andrew Thornton's top tips on backing the losing horse include:

  • Go with your gut - if you've got a track record of picking the last horse, continue as normal - trust your gut
  • Back the Irish - plenty of Irish horses have won, plenty of Irish jockeys have lost - back the Irish and you'll win either way
  • Under pressure - Stage fright happens to us all, spot the horse who's on his toes and that's the one for you
  • On the cards - if you're horse is near the bottom of the race card ranking, you're probably not a long way from a Magners

George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship at Magners Irish Cider said: "Although it's statistically harder to pick the last horse over the line, for many it feels inevitable. In our first year as Presenting Partner of The FestivalTM and as title sponsor of the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup, we wanted to bring our Irish, positive view on life to the big race.

"The opportunity to turn a loss into a gain, with a case of Magners redeemable against a 'losing ticket', should help lift the spirits of even the unluckiest punter."

Carey Weeks, Regional Head of Partnerships - South West at Jockey Club Racecourses said: "We love this concept from our partners at Magners. Could we see the famous Cheltenham roar go up at the end of the race for the very last horse to finish? It depends how unlucky, or lucky you are!"

Even if you don't have a bet on the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup, you can still win a case of Magners. Visit the Magners Facebook page from Thursday 14th March and use the random selector video to pick a horse. Post a screenshot on the video and if your horse is the last over the line in the big race, you'll be entered into a draw to win a case.
