Fabio Fognini has been embroiled in controversy following a shocking on-court outburst at Wimbledon.

The No.12 seed stunned fans inside Court 14 after saying he wished a "bomb" would explode at the famed tennis club.

A combination of his poor performance and being shoved on a less desirable court led to a sickening rant during his straight sets defeat to Tennys Sandgren.

"Damn, English, really. Damned really," he said as the on-court microphones picked up his outburst.

"Wish a bomb would explode on this club. A bomb should explode here."

The Italian lost his singles match 6-3 7-6 6-3.

Fognini offered an apology after saying Wimbledon should be bombed: "Something happened on court. If somebody feels offended, I say sorry. No problem.

"Most of the time when you're on court, you're frustrated. For sure I was not happy about my performance today because I was knowing I have a lot to win in this case, because I think I have a good chance to win."

Naturally, fans are extremely unhappy with his comments. Here's some reaction from social media:

Fognini has a chequered history in the sport. He was thrown out of the US Open two years ago for verbally abusing a female umpire.
