He also restricted the hosts to 270, bowling his nine overs at over 4 runs an over, picking up the one wicket.
And like Root, was unbeaten with the bat scoring 39 from just 27 balls including six boundaries. Woakes also scored the winning runs, sealing the victory with a '4'.
Meanwhile, England can now clinch the five-match series with victory in the third ODI at Sydney on Sunday.
