Usain Bolt will continue his quest for immortality today when he lines up in round one of the 200m. It's always exciting to see Bolt race but we've seen him chest thump his way to enough 100, 200 and 4x100 races by now, it's time for something different and he's thrown a challenge to deliver it.

In the early hours of Monday morning the Jamaican superstar was once again jogging to Olympic gold but for once he wasn't the headline act with South African 400m runner Wayde van Niekerk very much stealing the thunder!

Van Niekerk became the first athlete to win Olympic gold from lane eight since 1924 and took Michael Johnson's 17 year old world record away from the legendary American runner.

There's talk that the 24 year old could also compete at 200m and encroach on the domain of Bolt but before that happens the 100m and 200m world record holder wants to meet the South African on the neutral ground of 300m.

"Three hundred metres - that would be a good race. I'd really like to compete against him over 300m. Hopefully next season if he's in good shape."

Bolt, who will retire after the World Championships in London next year, started his career at 400m and there has been talk throughout his time as the world's best sprinter that he could move up to the longer distance again but it never happened.

It would be a really interesting contest and the new Olympic star might even be the favourite considering he's the only man in history to run the 100m in under 10 seconds, 200m in under 20 seconds and 400m in under 44 seconds.

When Bolt is retired Van Niekerk could be athletics new hero, especially if he beats the immortal over 300m.
