The outcome of the Winter Olympic men's curling final was predicted by The Simpsons years ago.

The show, which is getting a reputation for having a weird knack for predicting the future, featured a storyline wherein Marge and Homer joined the US curling team and took them to victory over favourites Sweden.

Which is pretty much exactly what happened in the final today - minus Homer and Marge being on the team, of course.

The tense final saw Sweden, who had only lost two out of ten in the run-up to the match, defeated by the US team at the Gangneung Curling Centre.

Over on Twitter, people made the obvious connection between the Boy Meets Curl episode from February 2010 and the real-life event today:

The cartoon has managed to successfully guess a few future events, perhaps most famously (and bizarrely), is the presidency of Donald Trump. In the episode, Bart to the Future, aired in 2000, Lisa is president and as she sits in the Oval Office, she tells her team: "We've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump."

Explaining where the storyline came from, Matt Groening told The Guardian: "We predicted that he would be president back in 2000 - but [Trump] was of course the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of at the time, and that's still true. It's beyond satire."

The show has also predicted the outbreak of the Ebola virus, the Fox/Disney merger and the horse-meat scandal.

Is The Simpsons correctly predicting the future or are we all just subconsciously acting out our favourite episodes? We may never know.
