For the last six months, rumours surrounding Conor McGregor's potential involvement with WWE and an appearance at WrestleMania 33 have refused to go away. Until now.

The UFC Lightweight Champion drew the ire of WWE fans and superstars alike after comments he made during the build up to his UFC 202 bout with Nate Diaz in which he called WWE superstars 'pussies' when asked about a potential appearance in the squared circle.

"For the most part, those WWE guys are pussies, to be honest," McGregor said. "They're messed up pussies, if you ask me. Fair play to Brock [Lesnar], he got in and fought, but at the end of the day he was juiced up to the fucking eye balls, so how can I respect that? And then what's the other guy? The other guy [CM Punk] hasn't fought yet, so I don't know about him yet."

"There's some dons in that wrestling game. The McMahons, they're dons. Triple H is a don. The Rock is a don. But the rest of them are pussies."

A further post on Twitter fuelled some pretty interesting reactions from members of the WWE's roster:

This war of words didn't seem to deter anyone from predicting a McGregor appearance in a WWE ring, with Triple H adding fuel to the fire by appearing at Madison Square Garden for McGregor's bought with Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 back in November.

However, according to a source who spoke to The Sun, 'The Notorious' will not be in attendance at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando on 2nd April.

"WWE has made no secret of its desire to do something with Conor McGregor and there were talks between the two parties about this year.

"Because he's taking time off from the UFC, there was a talk about doing something at this year's Wrestlemania in April, but it wasn't to be despite a hefty offer."

At least that gives us a year of solid build before McGregor vs Lesnar at WrestleMania 34, though. Make it happen, Conor. Take Vinnie Mac's money. It's the least you can do after you stole his strut.
