WWE have confirmed that Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund, the man described as the most recognisable interviewer in the sport, has passed away at the age of 76.

The man known as 'Mean Gene' was mostly famous for his backstage interviews with wrestlers, as well as commentary, during the 80s and 90s in WWE and WCW where he interviewed the likes of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man Randy Savage and Sting.

On Wednesday afternoon WWE confirmed the news that Okerlund, who was inducted into the company's Hall of Fame by Hogan in 2006, had passed away.

Legendary wrestler, and the company's Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative, Triple H (real name Paul Levesque) was one of many who paid tribute to Okerlund:

Okerlund had continued working with WWE for many years, after returning from WCW in 2001, and often turned up on anniversary shows for the promotion.

He was a part of Legend's House and WWE Story Time on the WWE Network and his last TV appearance came on RAW's 25th anniversary show when he interviewed AJ Styles.

RIP Mean Gene.
