Antonio Cassano has never courted controversy but it always seems to have followed him around. Now the Italian forward has finished his career on such a note, retiring just over a week after signing for his new club.

You don't play for AS Roma, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter without having a hell of a lot of talent and as a creative force and a goalscorer Cassano had that it bucket loads.

First playing and impressing for home club Bari as a teenager he earned himself a move to the capital with Roma after just two seasons in senior football, signing for the Italian champions for around €30 million aged just 19.

After a 20 year career that saw him reaching some pretty big heights and some equally big lows the 35 year old moved to Hellas Verona last week in what was likely to be the last move of his career.

Now it looks like that move will be an extremely short term one with Italian media reporting that just eight days after doing the deal Cassano will quit the yellow and blues and retire from football, citing homesickness as the reason:

Gazzetta dello Sport report that at 4 pm Italy time, 3pm in the UK, the former Sampdoria 99 will officially announce his retirement from football at a press conference.

The Italian sports newspaper also say that he had impressed in his early friendlies for his new club, putting on assists for teammates, but clearly family reasons have ended his career.

Cassano is arguably best known for his time at Real Madrid where he had a major falling out with manager Fabio Capello.
