Mourinho To Give United Star Until Christmas To Prove Himself

Mourinho To Give United Star Until Christmas To Prove Himself

It's make or break time

It may have taken two free spending summer transfer windows to accomplish, but Jose Mourinho seemingly has his Manchester United squad more or less exactly how he wants it. Although there are still players who aren't feeling too comfortable at Old Trafford.

One of which is Luke Shaw, who has endured a difficult at best relationship with Mourinho since the Portuguese manager's arrival at Old Trafford, last summer.

The former Southampton left-back has been plagued by injuries ever since his £30 million switch from St. Mary's in 2014 and a run of poor displays at the beginning of last season led to some very public criticism from Mourinho.

Shaw ended up making just 11 Premier League appearances for United, last term and only 19 in all competitions and is still yet to feature this season due to injury.

Mourinho has so far used Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian at left-back, but none of the trio are naturals in that position and it is often seen as the weak link in United's defence.

Now, according to the Mirror, the 22-year-old England international is running out of time to prove himself.

Shaw is currently stepping up his return from an ankle ligament injury and has played two games for United's reserve team, recently, but it is believed he only has until Christmas to secure his future at Old Trafford.

The former Southampton youngster signed a five-year deal when he arrived in Manchester in 2014 and the Red Devils have an option to trigger a one-year extension to that contract if they so wish. However, with Shaw only having 18 months left on the deal when the January transfer window opens, Mourinho may look to use the left-back as a makeweight in a deal to bring Tottenham's Danny Rose to Old Trafford.

Mourinho has also been looking at Fulham's 17-year-old Ryan Sessegnon and Celtic's 20-year-old Kieran Tierney as potential full-back options, although both players' lack of Premier League experience and experience in general would likely mean they wouldn't be immediate regular starters should they move to Old Trafford in the near future.

Shaw has always been well liked at Old Trafford and looked to have established himself as the club's regular left-back after an impressive start to the 2015-16 season under Louis Van Gaal. However, a horrific broken leg suffered during a Champions League group stage game against PSV Eindhoven then ruled Shaw out for the remainder of that campaign and he has struggled to regain top form ever since.
