UFC fans joke Ben Askren's wife is going to 'file for divorce' after Twitter post

The MMA star went viral after he attempted to praise his wife’s mothering skills in an inadvertent backhanded compliment.

UFC fans have torn into Ben Askren for a Twitter post that was meant to come off as a complement to his wife, but definitely missed the mark.

The former welterweight contender went viral after he attempted to praise his wife’s mothering skills in what may have inadvertently been a backhanded compliment.

He took to Twitter to post a picture of his wife and kids, with what was meant to be a positive message.

He wrote: “I’ve seen some guys posting on social media lately about how they are winning [because] their wife is attractive, while I don’t disagree I think finding a wife who is a great mother is 500 [per cent] more important!!!

“Thanks [Amy Askren] for being such a great mum to our kids.”

Look, we all know Ben meant well here and we’re sure he thinks his wife is attractive as well as a great mother. but it just goes to show that wording is important.

And boy, did MMA fans not let him live this one down.

One wrote: “Dude delete this before your wife consults an attorney.”

Another said: “Bruh… did you just sideways call your wife unattractive?”

A third added: “I would throw up if my man tweeted this about me.”

A fourth commented: “She about to file for divorce.”

While a fifth noted: “All you had to add was "my wife is both."

Landed himself in a bit of a pickle there.

The former ONE Welterweight Champion later went on to clarify exactly what he meant with his comments.

He said: “For those of you who are too dumb to realise multiple things can be true at once. My wife is both very hot and a great mother.

“Being a great mother is way more important, as I originally stated.”

Luckily for the MMA star his wife was more than understanding of what he was trying to get at - at least, that’s what she claims.

She tweeted: “Hahah it's ok I know what he's trying to say.

“And it's a much better compliment than ‘being pretty’. I hope our daughters aspire to love people well and not seek their value in the way they look.

“Thanks Ben Askren. And I love you for more than your pretty face too.”

So it doesn’t seem like a divorce is on the cards for the moment, but maybe Ben should get someone to proofread his tweets in the future.
