No pain, no gain.

Lionel Messi made history in El Clasico last night by scoring his 500th goal for Barcelona. But it wasn't all plain sailing for the club's all time leading scorer as he lost a tooth long before his winning goal.

El Clasico is rarely lacking in drama but last night it took it to another level with the Barcelona maestro coming up with an injury time winner with virtually the last kick of the game, which also handed him his landmark goal.

The 29 year old started the game on 498 goals but scored Barcelona's equaliser in the first half after midfielder Casemiro had put Los Blancos 1-0 up before the half hour mark.

Before his goals though Messi found himself in the wars. An elbow to the face by Marcelo left him with blood coming from his mouth and forced him to play the first half with tissue in his mouth.

But just when it looked like Messi fine, coming back from half time without a tissue, it seems that the forward's tooth wa a little looser than he must have first thought.

In a video from the tunnel you can clearly see Messi spit out a loose tooth as he makes his way to the pitch for the second period:

After going on to score the winning goal you somehow don't think Messi minds too much that he lost a tooth as he and his teammates tried, and succeeded, in getting the win over their fierce rivals.
