Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo might be close to each other when it comes to prowess on the pitch but the Barcelona man gets paid nearly twice as much as his rival according to reports on Friday.

Ashley Cole once said that hearing that Arsenal were 'only' offering him £65,000 a week to play football, whilst he was driving, nearly made him crash his car.

The former England international was ridiculed for years for that and it was one of the things that added to his pantomime bad guy persona for some but these days a player of his stature 'only' earning that much would be being short changed.

It's a sign of the ever growing money attached to players wages and transfer prices, after all Pep Guardiola regularly pays £40 million for full backs.

It's not exactly a surprise to find out that football players are being paid a lot of money but it's still a bit of shock to the system to see it written out and it's even more of a surprise to find that Lionel Messi gets so much more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

You might have thought the Juventus forward's move to Italy might have seen him earn more than his rival but it's not the case according to L'Equipe who have published the top 10 earner list:

1. Lionel Messi - £7.3 million per month

2. Cristiano Ronaldo - £4.1 million

3. Antoine Griezmann - £2.9 million

4. Neymar - £2.7 million

5. Luis Suarez - £2.5 million

7. Philippe Coutinho - £2 million

8. Alexis Sanchez - £2 million

9. Kylian Mbappe - £1.5 million

10. Mesut Ozil - £1.4 million

Footballers wages are always high but it's ridiculous to see that Messi is on that much a month!

The Premier League's top two earners are hardly worth their money since signing their deals. Alexis Sanchez signed for Manchester United just over a year ago and the former Arsenal man has scored just five goals in that time.

Mesut Ozil signed a reported £350k a week deal at the Emirates, after Sanchez left, and he can barely get in the team for the Gunners now.

I don't even want to think how long it would take me to earn their monthly wage...
