The World's Most Valuable Players List Has Some Big Surprises

Premier League players make up two of the world's three most valuable football players according to this year's list.

Transfer prices are constantly on the rise to the point that we just can't work out what is good value for money any more. Fortunately there's people who come up with lists based on stats to show us the way.

Jordon Ibe's £15 million move from Liverpool to Bournemouth last season is the example I love to use more than any on the state of differing prices to even five years ago when that much still seemed like a big deal.

Nowadays we shrug our shoulders almost until a team drops £30 million on a player and even then did many of us bat an eyelid when Manchester United casually handed over that much for Victor Lindelof at the weekend?

But that's transfer fees. The real question is are teams getting value for their money and just how much are players worth rather than how much clubs spend on them?

Fortunately CIES Football Observatory have worked that out. Based partially on "performance of both players and employer clubs, international status, contract, age and position" they have worked out that Neymar is the most valuable player on the planet.

Surprisingly Dele Alli and Harry Kane make it into the top three, ahead of Lionel Messi!

Awkwardly for almost all of us Paul Pogba is apparently valued at €134 million which equates to £118 million meaning that Manchester United actually got themselves a bargain for the Frenchman, apparently...

Equally if Chelsea pay £90 million for Romelu Lukaku this summer then that would equal good money indeed.
